《为奴十二年》是一部美国南方奴隶的血泪史，揭露了奴隶制是如何“合法”颠覆人类文明的。美国南方种植园主规训奴隶的手段和策略非常类似于福柯在《规训与惩罚》中所提及的层级监视、规范化裁决和检查。南方奴隶制的规训权力是通过层级监视的不可见性来施展的，并且用规范化裁决来强化层级监视，使权力规训渗透于社会生活的各个层面，使黑奴陷入难以消解的“社会性死亡”生存危机。
Abstract：12 Years a Slave offers a heart-wrenching account of slavery in the American South, exposing how the institution “legally” undermines human civilization. The methods and strategies Southern plantation owners employ to discipline enslaved people bear a striking resemblance to hierarchical observation, normalizing judgment and the examination as described by Michel Foucault in Discipline and Punish. The disciplinary power within the Southern slave system operates through the invisibility inherent in hierarchical observation and is reinforced by normalizing judgment that legitimizes and perpetuates hierarchical observation. Consequently, this power permeates all levels of social life, consigning enslaved Black people to an inescapable state of “social death”—a perpetual crisis of survival.
